Democratic Socialism within Democratic Party


To the United States now, where a political movement once seen as being on the fringes of the Democratic Party is increasingly moving into the mainstream.

And the 2026 midterm primaries are becoming a test of just how far to the left American voters are prepared to go.

The rise of Democratic Socialism, or progressive, left-leaning democrats, has been particularly visible since Zohran Mamdani’s breakthrough in New York.

Mamdani’s campaign, built around affordability, free public services, and a sharply pro-Palestinian message, demonstrated that a candidate calling himself a Democratic Socialist could mobilise young voters and progressives and win in a major American city.

Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports that his success has now become a model for candidates elsewhere.
