Crippling sanctions — the best response to a Russian missile hitting Poland | Ian Brzezinski
A Russian missile fell on Polish territory during Moscow’s massive barrage of Ukraine on Thursday. The incident occurred less than a year after dozens of Russian drones violated Polish airspace.
“I think it reflects a failure on the part of the Western community of nations, NATO, to really respond sufficiently to these provocations—whether intentional or not. (…) And we’re at risk of having more of these incidents happen unless we respond with greater fortitude against the Russians,” said Ian Brzezinski, Senior Fellow with the Atlantic Council. “We should, at a minimum, be imposing additional sanctions on Russia, if not further bolstering our air defense lines along NATO’s eastern frontier.”
Brzezinski conceded that the sanctions employed so far have not been particularly effective, but he believes that is due to them being “incremental.”
“They have been marginal. They’ve given time for Russia to adjust to them,” he said, advocating for a more decisive approach.
“It’s really time for the West to really body slam the Russian economy with secondary sanctions. You know, a complete economic cutoff,” similarily to the economic pressure applied to Iran a decade ago in order to make it comply regarding its nuclear program. “It’s what we should and can do against Russia today. That is an immediate step that I would take. It’s long overdue.”
