Consumers cutting back on fresh produce

South African consumers are cutting back on fresh produce, despite a sharp drop in prices over recent months.

According to the latest Household Affordability Index from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group, fruit prices plummeted by 8.5 percent year-on-year in May.

Month-on-month data shows sharp drops, with oranges down by 21 percent, alongside bananas and avocados.

However, the group warns that struggling households are still buying less fruit and vegetables as they are forced to prioritise soaring other costs.
