Community Boating celebrates 80 years with a 24-hour Charles River regatta.

You’ve probably spotted their bright pink sails from Memorial Drive. Usually, they pack it up once the sun begins to set — but not this weekend.

Starting Saturday at 10 a.m., sailors from Community Boating Inc. will ping-pong across the Charles River for 24 hours, in commemoration of the club’s 80th anniversary. Eight teams will compete in the first-of-its-kind regatta, each raising funds to benefit the club’s inclusive sailing programs, which are designed to open up the sport to sailors of all ages, incomes and abilities.

Executive Director Kate Ferris Richardson says that if this year’s relay goes well, she hopes to bring back the event annually. Last week, she walked us through what it takes to traverse the Charles after dark.
