People in Cali, Colombia, passed buckets of rubble off a collapsed building on Monday, August 10, after a powerful magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck the region.
Video recorded in Cali, on Monday shows people standing on a large pile passing buckets of debris down. Further footage from the same source depicts extensive structural damage to the exterior of a nearby apartment building.
Cali Mayor Alejandro Eder said that the city was responding to at least 12 critical points and 25 collapsed structures. Eder said that some residents remained trapped under the debris and requested emergency support from disaster teams in Bogota and Medellín to assist with active rescue operations.
The Governor of Valle del Cauca, the department where Cali is located, confirmed that at least 27 people died in the region, including three children. Across western Colombia, the death toll from the earthquake rose to at least 111 on Monday, according to officially reported figures.
