Despite a disjointed plot and animation that has been described as “crude”, Niu Lai or The Arrival of the Ox, has become China’s latest box office sensation. The movie started out as the country’s lowest-grossing animated film on its release on August 5. But it soon gained a cult following after social media users created memes using the film’s unpolished characters. On Sunday, Niu Lai grossed over 6 million yuan (US$890,000) at the box office, bringing its total since release to 10 million yuan, according to Chinese movie database Beacon.
