Brussels summit shaken by Trump’s Russia diesel deal | News in Depth
Leaders of the European Union have gathered in Brussels to discuss a controversial agreement with China, the EU’s long-term budget, and Russia’s war against Ukraine. The challenge facing Europe is enormous as the bloc tries to protect its industries, find billions for defense spending, and continue supporting Ukraine.
In News In-depth, Alex Cadier, TVP World’s Chief International Correspondent, notes that divisions in the negotiations remain significant, with net contributor states pushing for lower spending while countries that benefit most from EU funds are calling for a larger budget.
The talks, however, have been overshadowed by Donald Trump’s diesel deal with Russia. “Some are even saying that the masks have fallen and Europe now sees more clearly than ever which side Washington may be on,“ Cadier says.
He also points to growing concerns about Europe’s economic relationship with China. With a large trade deficit and increasing pressure from Chinese imports, Brussels is looking for ways to protect European industries while pushing for better access to the Chinese market. If negotiations fail, EU member states appear increasingly willing to consider stronger protective measures.
