Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva wins fourth term | ABC NEWS
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won the country’s presidential election, but his opponent, right-wing senator Flávio Bolsonaro, has said he will not concede defeat.
With 100% of the vote counted, Brazil’s electoral court said Lula, as he is known, held an unassailable lead over Senator Bolsonaro, son of imprisoned former president Jair Bolsonaro, to secure a fourth non-consecutive term.
The shock result defied polls, precedent, and global anti-incumbent sentiment, putting the brakes on a wave of right-wing election victories across Latin America.
It was a chaotic day for voters in the presidential election.
Polls were initially set to close at 5pm, local time, but were extended by two hours after Supreme Justice Cristiano Zanin accepted a request by Lula’s campaign to extend voting, pointing to public transportation issues in three cities in the state of Bahia.
In his victory speech, Lula said they “managed to convince people that voting was extremely important to safeguard democracy in Brazil”.
Senator Bolsonaro said the extended voting hours were “unacceptable” and it was “impossible” to acknowledge the results.
