Bottom Line | Extent of court orders to repay debt

The extent of recorded unpaid debt in South Africa has increased.

Between June and August, about 10 000 civil judgments, with court orders to repay debt, worth more than R350 million were recorded at more than two hundred magistrates courts.

Debts such as salaries and wages, medical fund debt, class and tuition debt, rates and property levies contributed the largest value of more than R90 million of the recorded civil judgments.

These were some of the figures released by Stats SA recently in their monthly statistics of civil cases report.

To talk more about the legal recourse that indebted persons have, we are joined by Advocate Thabo Motloung, a legal practitioner who has done extensive work on National Credit Act and reckless lending, debt review and legislative framework.
