Blakeman courts influencers, Hochul taps Mamdani as social strategies diverge in governor’s race

Many state and national campaigns are turning to influencers and content creators with large social media followings to help get their message to voters, according to campaign consultants, hoping to catch some of the social media virality that propelled New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to victory.

Whether these influencers are paid is largely based on the word of campaigns and influencers, because in New York, at least, social media figures don’t have to disclose if a candidate is paying them. Campaigns are required to disclose their expenditures, but in many instances they pay what’s known as a “media buyer” that coordinates everything from television ads to social media posts, meaning the influencers themselves aren’t necessarily disclosed.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman has embraced using networks of influencers and content created by artificial intelligence to grow support. Incumbent Democratic Gov. Hochul has largely focused on videos touting her record along with testimonials from lawmakers, her family and voters.
