Beyond Ukraine: Putin wants to reshape Europe’s security order | News in Depth
Donald Trump is once again reopening economic and diplomatic channels with Moscow, even as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues. A tanker carrying Russian diesel is on its way to the United States. Trump may genuinely want peace, but there’s little evidence that Vladimir Putin shares that goal. Despite this, Washington continues to make concessions to Russia, argues Stuart Dowell, Political Editor at TVP World, in News in Depth.
While Russia gains new benefits from the United States, Ukraine continues to report problems related to Starlink and Starshield, delays in weapons deliveries, and shortages of interceptor missiles purchased through the PEARL mechanism. At the same time, Trump is undermining Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s position by suggesting that Ukraine needs a different president.
Dowell also warns that discussions about a new European security architecture should be treated with caution, as they could revive old Russian demands regarding spreading its sphere of influence in Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, humanitarian initiatives such as the planned evacuation effort in occupied Oleshky may help local civilians, but they do not change the broader reality of the war.
