Artists in exile: Warsaw as a creative crossroads and a two-meter chicken | Pulse of Culture
From the banks of the River Seine in Paris to the streets of Warsaw and Berlin, this episode follows artists who left their homelands to create and found something extraordinary along the way.
Polish painter Marta Fonfara is following in the footsteps of generations of Polish artists who found inspiration in Paris, catching up with our correspondent while painting by the River Seine. In Warsaw, Congolese musician Michael Elenge has made the Polish capital his second home, bringing the rhythms of Congo to audiences who never expected to find them there. American trumpeter Gary Guthman has been living in Warsaw for twenty years, and we visit him at home to discover what the city’s rhythm has done to his music. And in Berlin, Belarusian artist Jura Shust is preparing his first solo exhibition in Poland, exploring the shifting boundaries between artificial intelligence, ancient folklore, nature and belief. Finally, if you’re looking for something to watch this summer, Joanna Deja’s documentary tells the story of a puppet maker who stands up to injustice in his local community in the only way he knows how: by building a two-meter-tall chicken.
