Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has sparked debate after revealing his blunt reaction to the death of fugitive cop killer Dezi Freeman, admitting his first thought was “good.”
Freeman, who had been on the run for months, was shot dead by police following a tense stand-off at a rural property in northeast Victoria. Authorities say the confrontation ended after Freeman allegedly emerged from a shipping container and pointed a firearm at officers.
The Prime Minister made the comments during an emotional discussion about the deaths of two officers — Neal Thompson and Vadim De Waart-Hottart — who were killed in the line of duty.
Speaking on ABC Melbourne with host Raf Epstein, Albanese said he had “no sympathy” for Freeman, blaming extremist “sovereign citizen” ideology for the violence.
Victoria Police confirmed Freeman was given multiple opportunities to surrender before the fatal shooting. Commissioner Mike Bush said officers acted appropriately, emphasizing that all efforts were made to resolve the situation peacefully.
The Prime Minister also paid tribute to the fallen officers, highlighting the risks police face daily to protect the community.
The incident has reignited national debate around police use of force, extremist ideologies, and justice for victims.
