Another ship hit and sunk in Black Sea as Russia tests NATO | Ukraine This Week
In this episode of Ukraine This Week, Don Arleth is joined by Yevgeniya Gaber, Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council, to discuss Russia’s escalating attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea and the growing risks to NATO members Romania and Bulgaria.
Gaber warns that the attacks are expanding into NATO territorial waters, threatening merchant crews, Ukrainian export routes and critical energy infrastructure.
She calls for stronger NATO action, including enhanced air defense and counter-drone capabilities, as well as a permanent maritime security mission in the western Black Sea.
“Surveillance can detect drones, but not stop them,” Gaber says, arguing that statements and investigations alone are no longer sufficient.
Without credible deterrence and a coordinated response, Russia will continue to escalate, she warns, stressing that “deterrence takes capabilities, credibility, and communication.”
