America building in Russia’s former backyard | Eastern Express

Armenia has begun ratifying the agreement behind TRIPP, a Washington-backed transport project crossing the country’s southern Meghri region.

The 43-kilometer route could connect Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave and Turkey while opening Armenia to new trade, energy and communications networks. Washington would receive a dominant stake in the development company, although Armenian authorities would retain sovereign control over borders, customs and security. Russia and Iran are looking at the project with concern as American influence expands across territory Moscow once expected its own security services to supervise.

Eastern Express host Jonasz Rewiński and his guest, Richard Giragosian, Founding Director of the Regional Studies Center, examine whether Trump’s railway could help loosen Putin’s geopolitical grip on the South Caucasus.
