Ambulance Victoria drops ‘no beards’ requirement for paramedics | ABC NEWS
A student paramedic successfully challenged Ambulance Victoria’s requirement that all ambulance workers be clean-shaven for mask fitting purposes.
19-year-old Prabhjeet Gill, who is Sikh, filed a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission, arguing that Ambulance Victoria’s refusal to let him undertake a mask fitting without shaving first was discriminating on cultural and religious grounds.
The Singh Thattha mask fitting method involves covering the beard with an elastic band underneath the mask, and has been adopted in other jurisdictions to achieve a safe mask fitting.
