‘Alliance Against Greater Israel’: Iran Lauds Mecca Pact; Tehran Backs ‘America-Free’ Mideast
Iranian media is hailing the Mecca pact between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan as a major shift in Middle East security, arguing that regional powers are moving beyond reliance on Washington. Signed on August 7, the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement treats an armed attack on one member as an attack on all three. While the signatories call it purely defensive and not directed at any country, Iranian analysis views it as a potential response to Israeli expansionism and declining trust in US security guarantees. The pact could reshape regional alliances, strengthen Muslim security cooperation and encourage other countries to consider similar collective defence arrangements.
