After Vučić’s fall, Serbia can catch up with EU enlargement frontrunners | Marta Kos
The results of Serbia’s election and the removal of Aleksandar Vučić from power are once again raising questions about the country’s European future. “Serbia has been a candidate country for more than ten years, but instead of making progress, it has been moving backwards,” says Marta Kos, European Commissioner for Enlargement, in World Talks. “The victory of the Student List could be a new beginning for Serbia on its European path,” she adds.
According to Kos, the priorities identified by the student movement closely match the reforms expected by the European Union: strengthening the rule of law, ensuring judicial independence, protecting media freedom, and fighting corruption. At the same time, she stresses that Serbia still has significant work to do after years of democratic backsliding and stalled reforms.
One major question remains Serbia’s alignment with the EU’s foreign and security policy, including sanctions against Russia. Kos argues that countries seeking EU membership must share the Union’s strategic interests, particularly regarding Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Whether Serbia’s new leadership is willing to move in that direction remains to be seen.
The European Commissioner also believes that the coming years could be decisive for EU enlargement. If reforms continue and member states give their approval, as many as three or four candidate countries could join the European Union by 2030.
