What does success mean for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders?
The sounds of dance, song and conversation moved through the stringybark forests as young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders yarned about university degrees, businesses, diplomacy, culture and community leadership.
They voiced ambition without hesitation and when asked what success means, their answers went beyond careers and salaries to family, culture, language, Elders and Country.
National conversations about improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have often focused on measures such as education, employment and economic participation, with a particular emphasis on youth.
For the young people SBS News spoke with at this year’s Garma Festival, these are not separate measures of success; they are part of the same story.
