Could Ukraine outshine Raytheon & Lockheed in Patriot production? | News In Depth
One month after U.S. President Donald Trump dangled the possibility of Ukraine being granted the license to manufacture Patriot interceptors in front of President Zelenskyy at the NATO summit in Ankara, it seems that the negotiations have stalled. Doubts are being voiced about whether the White House consulted the matter with Raytheon and Lockheed Martin ahead of the announcement at all. But what exactly would make the two defense industry giants keep the license so close to the chest?
“The makers of the product have concerns about sharing the IP, meaning intellectual property rights. (…) And to share it with a country which is not even in NATO would be an extraordinary step to take,” said Marcin Zaborowski, TVP World’s Europe Editor.
“Ukraine, with its quite good missile-making abilities, with much cheaper labor force, with much cheaper energy costs, would be able to make it faster and cheaper than the U.S. companies can. So that factor might be at play too,” he explained.
