The Graham bill could make Putin’s life very difficult – if passed | Nico Lange

With the meeting between U.S. State Secretary Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov yielding no progress in getting Moscow to tone down their maximalist demands toward Ukraine, a negotiated peace settlement of the Russo-Ukrainian war is nowhere in sight. Is there anything the U.S. can do to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to seriously consider peace talks?

“Zelensky is going (…) to the funeral of Lindsey Graham. (…) Trump is more supportive to Ukraine now than he has been before. The last three meetings were very good,” Nico Lange, Senior Fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), told TVP World, adding that the Russia sanctions bill authored by late U.S. Senator Graham, who came to be known as a supporter of Ukraine, could provide a way for Washington to assist Ukraine while it itself is preoccupied with the conflict with Iran.

According to Lange, if passed, the bill “could increase the pressure on Russia in a time when the energy situation for Putin is already very difficult. And maybe this is a starting point for a serious conversation should the bill really be passed.”

What is more, the secondary sanctions the bill envisions “will also affect, for example, Chinese banks that are helping with Russian financial business.”

“And if China has to decide ‘what is more important to us? Helping Russia, or trade with the United States?’ I think they will decide for trade with the United States, and that might change the position and bring us closer to Russia becoming serious about negotiations,” Lange said.

Join TVP World’s Adam Jasser and his guest as they discuss the impact of mutual long-range strikes exchanged by Russia and Ukraine as the frontlines appear to have stalled and whether Kyiv’s deep strike campaign can force Moscow to the negotiating table, as well as whether Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent slew of ill-advised political decisions endangers the effects of the war’s momentum shifting into Ukraine’s favor.
