Pete Hegseth says NZ ‘freeloading’ off US
US defence secretary Pete Hegseth was asked whether he felt New Zealand was “freeloading” off the United States, prompting laughter from the audience.
In response, and commenting on New Zealand’s plan to increase defence spending from 1 per cent to 2 per cent of gross domestic product, Hegseth said that 2 per cent was “not enough, and so 2 per cent is freeloading”, but added that he was most blunt with his “closest friends”.
