DRC | Ebola cases expected to rise as Congo outbreak went undetected
In an update on the fast-developing situation in eastern DRC, World Health Organization Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that beyond the several dozen confirmed cases of infection, there are almost 600 suspected cases of Ebola Bundibugyo virus, and 139 suspected deaths.
He added that the toll is expected to climb, as the virus circulated undetected for weeks before being identified.
No vaccine exists for the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. Meanwhile, the World Bank says it is mobilising funding and technical support to bolster the response. Khayelihle Khumalo reports.
