China benefits too much from Ukraine war to push Putin to end it | News in Depth

Just days after U.S. President Donald Trump met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Beijing is hosting Russia’s Vladimir Putin. What is the status of the “strategic partnership” between Russia and China these days?

“There is no parity in this relationship, that’s for sure,” says Marcin Zaborowski, TVP World’s Europe Editor, citing the trade imbalance between the two countries and how most of Russia’s exports to China are energy resources. “It’s an asymmetric relationship in which China does not really need Russia that much, as vice versa.”

Concurrently with Putin’s visit to China, Hungary’s new Prime Minister Péter Magyar made his first foreign trip to Poland, in a clear signal that he wants a reset in the relationship between Warsaw and Budapest.

As Zaborowski points out, Magyar can look up to his Polish counterpart, Donald Tusk, as a kind of mentor, and it seems like key points of his foreign policy, such as a closer relationship with the EU and a less adversarial attitude toward Kyiv, “all very consistent with the objectives of Poland’s government.”

Join News in Depth’s host Klaudia Czerwińska and her guest as they discuss the symbolism-laden itinerary of Magyar’s trip to Poland, the asymmetric nature of the Russia-China relationship, and why Xi has no reason to use his leverage over Putin to push for an end to the latter’s war in Ukraine.
