Past UEC talks failed due to clash between Chinese independent, national school systems, says Anwar
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) had been delayed for decades due to differences between the Chinese independent school system and the national education system.
However, the Cabinet has now agreed in principle to recognise the UEC for entry into public universities, provided students pass Bahasa Malaysia and History in the SPM.
Speaking during the opening of the national-level Teachers’ Day celebration in Ipoh, Perak, on Saturday (May 16), Anwar stressed that proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia and an understanding of Malaysia’s history and Constitution are essential for all citizens.
