Is Rumen Radev Bulgaria’s new Orbán? | News in Depth

In this episode of News in Depth, we discuss the final results of the parliamentary elections in Bulgaria. Former president Rumen Radev scored a landslide victory. Although Radev has been involved in Bulgarian politics for years, he presented himself to Bulgarians as a fresh, pro-change alternative, according to Paweł Trzaskowski, TVP World’s Balkans correspondent. Trzaskowski adds that young people were highly motivated and turned out to vote in greater numbers than before.

Analyzing the future prime minister’s campaign, Trzaskowski notes that it focused on domestic issues, pushing foreign policy into the background. “He is not openly pro‑Russian,” the correspondent says, adding that on many issues—such as sanctions or security—Radev “is not skeptical toward Russia.” Watch the episode for a full analysis of Bulgaria’s election results.
