Xi tells Trump ‘normal for the two leading economies to have frictions’
US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have concluded a meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit following months of friction between their two countries over tariffs and security, indicating that a trade deal could come “pretty soon”.
As they sat down with their delegations to start talks, Xi told Trump, via a translator, that it was normal for the two leading economies of the world to have frictions now and then.
“In the face of winds, waves and challenges, you and I at the helm of China-US relations should stay the right course and ensure the steady sailing forward of the giant ship of China-US relations.”
Trump later described the meeting as “amazing” and said tariffs on China “will be 47 per cent, down from 57 per cent”.
