Licenced alcohol to return to Wadeye after thirty ‘dry’ years | ABC NEWS
One of the Northern Territory’s biggest remote communities is on the cusp of a return of licenced alcohol, after some thirty ‘dry’ years.
Traditional owners in Wadeye say the new social club will be a place for people to enjoy drinking in moderation. They also hope it will reduce drink-driving and long-grassing in urban centres.
The NT’s Liquor Commission too is hoping 6-packs of mid-strength beer will prove a more attractive option than $500 bottles of smuggled rum.
But critics say the stakes are high and hinges on the club’s proper management, as licenced liquor returns to a community already riven with alcohol-related problems. James Elton filed this report for Stateline Northern Territory.
