‘Catastrophic’ Hurricane Melissa causes ‘significant damage’ in Jamaica as it wreaks havoc

Jamaica’s Energy and Transport Minister Daryl Vaz claims Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall in Jamaica as a Category Five storm, has caused “significant damage to infrastructure” as it wreaks havoc on the island.

“We are hoping to be able to do an assessment tomorrow, but as of right now, the reports that are coming in are catastrophic,” he told Sky News Australia.

“We are expecting seven-to-13-foot surges on the lowline areas, which comes after the eye … we’re just praying that we’ll be saved in terms of the loss of lives.”
