Australia passes laws set to streamline transfer of former detainees to Nauru


Parliament has approved new legislation allowing the government to bypass procedural fairness for non-citizens facing removal to a third country.

The laws are linked to the government’s $2.5 billion resettlement plan to transfer 354 members of the so-called NZYQ cohort — released after a landmark High Court ruling — to Nauru at an initial cost of $408 million and $70 million annually thereafter.

The move, aimed at streamlining deportations of non-citizens who have “no legal right to remain in Australia”, has drawn criticism from human rights lawyers and advocates, who warn it strips away vital checks and balances.
