Provinces spend billions but capital projects lag

South African provinces have spent R198.4 billion in the first quarter of the 2025/26 financial year, with a larger portion being on education but a slower delivery of capital projects remains concerning.

The spending in the first quarter marks an increase of 1.7%, compared to the same period in the previous financial year.

The figures were released today by the National Treasury in its First Quarter Provincial Budgets and Expenditure Report.
