Broker fee ban: Landlords in Mass. can no longer require renters to pay
Living in Massachusetts may have just gottenjust got a little more affordable. As of Aug. 1, landlords can no longer require apartment tenants to pay broker fees.
The Massachusetts Legislature passed a measure in early July effectively eliminating tenant-paid fees, typically equivalent to one month’s rent, to the middlemen who often arrange deals in Boston’s uber-competitive apartment market. The fee now should now be charged to whichever party — landlord or tenant — first works with the broker.
The new law only applies to leases signed after Aug. 1, meaning it doesn’t apply to the thousands of people who have already made arrangements are moving on Sept. 1.
