Victorious Democrats set to probe Trump’s Russia ties | On the Record
Donald Trump has suffered a major political setback as Democrats seize control of both chambers of Congress in the U.S. midterm elections. But could the outcome also deal a blow to Vladimir Putin? And will Trump’s business ties to Russia come under renewed scrutiny as Democrats prepare congressional investigations into his administration? In this edition of On the Record, Adam Jasser speaks with Ian Brzezinski, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council and former senior Pentagon official, about the consequences of Trump’s electoral defeat for U.S. foreign policy, relations with Russia and the future of transatlantic security. Brzezinski warns that Trump appears determined to pursue closer ties with Moscow and Beijing, potentially seeking a new great-power arrangement reminiscent of Yalta. Could the new Congress force him to change course by imposing tougher sanctions on Russia, restoring military assistance to Ukraine and preventing reductions in American troops stationed in Europe?
Brzezinski argues that Democrats could use their new congressional majorities to put significant pressure on Trump, potentially winning support from Republicans on key national security issues. By exercising Congress’s powers over legislation and federal spending, lawmakers could make it increasingly difficult for the president to pursue controversial foreign policy decisions.
