The losers and winners of youth revolts | On Air
The youth protests in Serbia have just scored the biggest success of all – an election win and the deposition of a corrupt government. Can other such movements achieve the same? What are the reasons for young people across the world to take to the streets – and who’s seeking to capitalize on them?
In this episode of On Air, host Klara Syrewicz and her team examine the growing wave of youth-led protests, driven by anger over corruption, economic insecurity, unemployment and political exclusion. From the EU to Serbia, Georgia and Ukraine, through India, Nepal and Madagascar, a new generation is challenging entrenched governments. But young people’s frustration also creates an opportunity for political forces seeking to exploit their anger.
This episode looks at how parties use TikTok, gaming platforms, lifestyle content and social media influencers to attract younger audiences, and why economic concerns such as rising living costs and job insecurity can make young people compromise on their own convictions.
It also analyses the contrasting outcomes of previous youth uprisings like the ones in Nepal and Madagaskar, the legacy of the Arab Spring, and the historical impact of the 1968 protests.
Can these street protest movements evolve into lasting political change, or will their energy once again be seized by those already in power?
