‘Tusk Coup’ Battle Explodes: Protesters Return In Huge Numbers, Poland’s Top Court Under Danger
Police remain deployed around Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal as the country’s institutional crisis increasingly spills from courtrooms and government offices onto the streets of Warsaw. Officers were stationed around the tribunal after protesters breached a security perimeter during chaotic scenes outside the building. Three people were detained, while police say objects were thrown at officers as demonstrators attempted to enter the tribunal grounds. Protesters returned the following day as President Karol Nawrocki personally entered the court. Inside, the confrontation is equally bitter. Judges moved to suspend tribunal president Bogdan Swieczkowski and his deputy, but the existing leadership refuses to recognise that decision and has described the intervention as a “coup d’état.” Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s camp and Nawrocki’s allies each argue they are defending Poland’s constitutional order. The result: protesters outside, rival authorities inside — and police guarding the institution caught at the centre of Poland’s escalating power struggle.
