In Russian-occupied Oleshky, the evacuation of civilians is underway. Many people forget that the ceasefire is temporary, local in scope, and would not be needed at all if the aggressor were not occupying Ukrainian territory. “This ceasefire is a PR stunt for Trump,” says Adam Jasser, News Director at TVP World, in News in Depth. Jasser argues that Trump is under pressure ahead of the U.S. midterm elections and is eager to present any diplomatic achievement he can claim as a success to voters.
At the same time, a battle is underway over who gets a seat at the negotiating table in Abu Dhabi. Russia is no longer hiding the fact that it does not see Europe as a participant in those talks. Europe, however, is pushing back and trying to secure a role in shaping any future settlement.
Frustrations are also growing across Europe, including in Poland. According to Jasser, the leader of Poland’s opposition party, Law and Justice, is effectively presenting a roadmap for undermining the European Union from within. He has threatened to use vetoes if future treaty changes do not meet his expectations, while the ultimate option on the table appears to be Polexit. “He is proposing the creation of a new velvet curtain in Europe,” Jasser says.
