Nordic leaders reaching out to Putin | News in Depth
European leaders, acting in consultation with their allies, held a phone call with Vladimir Putin. Russia is clearly changing its narrative when it comes to contacts with Europe. Just a year ago, both Putin and the Americans were reluctant to see Europe at the negotiating table, says Adam Jasser, News Director at TVP World, in News in Depth. Now, one of Putin’s advisers is openly saying that Europe must also be part of the discussion.
At the same time, it is difficult to ignore the possibility that Putin is trying to draw European leaders into a diplomatic trap. This concern has only grown since Moscow acknowledged that any talks on Ukraine should also include discussions about Europe’s broader security architecture. However, as Jasser points out, the Nordic leaders know Putin’s tactics well. Europe also cannot afford to step back from the Ukraine issue, because Ukraine’s security remains closely linked to Europe’s own security.
