SMART Tunnel shields KL from billions in flood damage, says ALR chief

The SMART Tunnel has prevented an estimated RM4.94bil in property damage in Kuala Lumpur by diverting 266.03 million cubic metres of floodwater across more than 685 incidents since opening in May 2007.

Amanat Lebuhraya Rakyat Bhd (ALR) group chief executive officer Muhammad Nizam Alias said flood mitigation and public safety would take priority over toll revenue, while noting that flash floods could still occur in areas outside the tunnel’s coverage.
