Clashes erupt in Italy during cost of living protests
The Italian government announced that it will dispatch 500 army troops to “defend Milan”, after violence broke up in the city on the weekend.
Milan police clashed with protesters who were throwing stones and looting shops during demonstrations against poor services and the rising cost of living, a day after similar unrest in several other Italian cities.
Video showed police in riot gear firing tear gas after several hundred hooded protesters broke shop windows and set bins on fire in the area near the central Piazza Duomo.
Italian police say 250 people were detained, around 80 per cent of them minors.
Similar clashes erupted earlier this week in northern cities including Milan, Bologna, Brescia, Bergamo and Turin, according to police reports.
