Workers at RCL Foods on strike over wages
RCL Foods’ Sugar Mill workers in Malelane Nkomazi, have downed tools after they failed to reach an agreement during wage negotiations.
It is reported that negotiations started in April with employees tabling a 13% increase.
However, the employer has offered a 5.4% wage increase across the board, an offer which employees rejected.
The South African Sugar Industry is one of the world’s leading producers of high quality sugar, producing an average of 2.3 million tons per annum.
However, it is reported that the sector has lost more than R1.5 billion in revenue in the past year.
