Five years after the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan, the country remains internationally isolated but diplomatic engagement with Kabul continues. Russia is the only country to have formally recognized the Taliban government, while other states maintain varying levels of contact. Ashley Jackson, Co-Founder of the Centre on Armed Groups, argues that Western governments spend too much time trying to change the Taliban and should focus instead on supporting Afghans living under its rule.
