Putin’s Military Regains Control Of Bases In Israel’s Backyard; Russia To Train U.S.-Allied Army
Russia’s military footprint in Syria is entering a major new phase after Moscow and Damascus reached an agreement over the future of the key Russian facilities at Tartous and Hmeimim. After 18 months of negotiations, Syria says it will take control of civilian facilities, including Hmeimim airport and commercial areas at Tartous port, while military sites will be repurposed into joint training and qualification centres. The transition is expected to take place within three months. The deal comes months after the ouster of long time Russian ally Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Despite the political upheaval, Syria’s new leader Ahmed al-Sharaa has sought to maintain ties with Moscow and has held talks with Vladimir Putin over the future of Russia’s presence. At the same time, Syria has expanded relations with the United States and Western and Arab countries. With Russian and US interests both present in Syria, the new arrangement could reshape the country’s strategic importance in the Mediterranean and Middle East.
