SABC News Exclusive Documentary : When Women Rise Episode 1

Titled When Women Rise, the series takes viewers on a journey from the events that culminated in the historic march to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956, where more than 20,000 women protested against the extension of pass laws. It then traces the evolution of women’s activism in South Africa, highlighting the generations of women who carried the struggle forward.

The series explores pivotal moments including the 1976 Student Uprisings, the role of women in the underground liberation movement, and the contributions of women who helped shape South Africa’s constitutional democracy during the transition to freedom.

The documentary also turns its focus to the challenges confronting women today, examining issues such as unemployment, gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), and persistent inequality.

Through landmark moments such as the Total Shutdown marches and the #AmINext protest to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the series reflects on how women continue to mobilise in pursuit of justice, safety and equality.
