A breakthrough blood test that can predict Alzheimer’s disease years before symptoms appear is now available in Sydney. The test detects tau and amyloid protein abnormalities in the blood with over 90% accuracy, matching the gold standard of PET scans and lumbar punctures. Professor Matthew Kiernan, CEO of Neuroscience Research Australia, explains the test can be organised by general practitioners and will enable specific diagnoses, allowing patients to access targeted monoclonal antibody therapies now approved by the TGA.
