Beyond Game Day | What Sports Remembers | 17 July 2026

Sport remembers the result. It also remembers the people behind it.

Thabiso Sithole and Vata Ngobeni begin this episode of Beyond Game Day by honouring two young South African athletes whose journeys ended before their full potential could be realised.

They reflect on the rise of former South Africa Under-18 rugby prop Luqobo Makwedini, his move to France and the Springbok future the hosts believed may have been ahead of him.

The conversation then turns to Jayden Adams, whose journey from Cloetesville to club and international football became more than a career story. For the hosts, his legacy lies partly in what he made possible for children growing up in difficult circumstances.

From grief, the episode moves into pressure and accountability. South African cricket is praised for reaching finals, but challenged to finally bring home the trophy.

The hosts also confront confusion around Hugo Broos, SAFA’s leadership and who deserves credit for Bafana Bafana’s progress. Springbok ticket prices raise another question: can a national team remain national if ordinary supporters are priced out?

This is an episode about performance, purpose and the record sporting leaders leave behind.
