From the crusaders to the Kremlin: The battle for the Baltics | How We Got Here
Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. To most of the world they are collectively knowne as the Baltic states. To Russia they are “the near abroad,” part of their historic empire. Another group of countries between east and west. Is that all?
There is more to the Baltics than this: for centuries, the land of the modern Baltic states stood on the fault line between empires. Crusaders, tsars, Nazis, and Soviets all fought to control this narrow stretch of land between Russia and Europe.
Why does the Kremlin still see the Baltics as part of its sphere of influence? Why has the region once again become one of NATO’s most sensitive frontlines?
Join Jan Darasz and his guest, Tomasz Zduńczyk, Baltic and Nordic Analyst at the Polish Institute of International Affairs in this episode of How We Got Here, as they explore the long history of Russian expansion, Soviet occupation, and the geopolitical struggle that still shapes the region today.
