Number Of The Day | 6000 | 25 May 2026
6000; that is today’s Number of the Day.
Gareth Edwards and Francis Herd look at Netcare’s rollout of medical-grade wearable monitoring devices for patients in general wards, linked to around 6,000 beds across the country.
The device looks like a watch, but it is designed to do far more than count steps. It continuously tracks key patient vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, oxygen levels and heart rhythm, giving clinical teams a more constant view of what is happening.
The big question is obvious: if technology is doing the monitoring, what happens to nurses?
Gareth explains that Netcare’s answer is not replacement, but relief. The argument is that wearable monitoring can free nurses from repetitive checks and give them more time to focus on patient care, human judgement and the questions machines cannot ask.
The discussion also turns to AI in ICU, where predictive models may help detect dangerous changes earlier, and ambient AI, which could reduce doctor admin.
6000; a hospital technology story with a human question at its centre: can smarter machines make healthcare feel more personal?
