Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has strongly criticized proposals to fast-track Ukraine into closer integration with the European Union, warning that such a move could undermine long-standing EU candidate countries in the Western Balkans and weaken the bloc itself. Fico reacted to reports that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had proposed granting Ukraine immediate associate status within the EU, allowing Kyiv to participate in European institutions without voting rights while receiving expanded political and economic privileges. “We all know that Ukraine is not at all ready for accession to the Union,” Fico said, questioning what message such preferential treatment would send to countries like Montenegro, Albania, and Serbia, which have spent years waiting for EU membership progress.
