UPDATE: Deadly San Diego mosque shooting being investigated as hate crime
San Diego officials provided a second update Monday afternoon about the deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Three people were killed, and the teenage suspects are also dead, according to police. The shooting is being investigated as a hate crime. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said one of the deceased was a security guard at the center, and the other two victims are adult staff. Wahl called the security guard’s actions during the incident “heroic.”
Wahl said the mother of one of the two suspects filed a report to police saying her son was missing, and feared he was suicidal. The mother told officials that she saw her weapons and vehicle were missing. The suspects were found dead of apparently self-inflicted gunshot wounds near the Islamic Center.
The suspects were 17 and 18 years old.
