China’s powerful weapon could bring the West to its knees as Taiwan prepares for war
The US and China are scrambling for control over the Beylikova mine site in Turkey, believed to contain the world’s second-largest deposit of rare earth minerals.
The materials are critical for producing everything from fighter jets and missiles to AI systems and smartphones.
China currently controls more than 90 per cent of the world’s refined supply, raising growing security concerns in the West.
The issue featured in talks between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping during their summit this week.
Meanwhile, Taiwan has warned it is preparing for the threat of war with China, with the island planning to increase defence spending and reach a “high level” of combat readiness by 2027.
